From Rainy Nights to First Sales - Maxfield Cigar Accessories, Co.
Hello friend,
It's Kevin here. I thought I’d follow up from our first email. At Maxfield we believe in being an open book, so we thought we'd share more about ourselves. Here's a short story about me from waaaaay back...
When I was 8 years old, growing up in Wisconsin, I had a crazy idea: could I create something that adults would actually pay for? Sure, selling baseball cards to my friends was easy, but convincing a grown-up to part with their money? That was a whole new challenge.
One day, while shopping with my family at Fleet Farm, I saw a nightcrawler storage kit, and the idea struck—what if I sold nightcrawlers to local fishermen?
The excitement was instant. I could picture myself running a little business, and I convinced my parents to loan me enough money to buy the supplies I thought I needed. But reality soon hit hard. I hadn’t realized nightcrawlers only come out at night, and primarily after it rains. Eventually, the dream started to feel like a burden. Still, I wasn’t ready to give up.
So, in the middle of those lonely, rainy nights, I’d crawl out of bed with flashlight in hand, and wander into the dark, wet yard to gather my inventory. Each step felt heavier than the last, and there were nights I wanted to quit.
But then came a flicker of hope—I finally had enough crawlers to start selling. Yet, another hurdle appeared: no one knew I was selling them. I felt the weight of frustration sink in. Who was going to buy nightcrawlers from a kid? I was discouraged, but I kept pushing. I made a sign and put it out by the road, hoping for the best. I told family and friends to spread the word. Days passed, and then one day, a car pulled up. An adult actually wanted to buy from me. I was shaking, nervous, but proud.
That first sale taught me a powerful lesson: success comes with highs and lows, moments of doubt and triumph. Even as a kid, I could see that no venture was going to be simple. But, that small reward of that first sale made me understand that patience was key.
This lesson stuck with me as Erica and I faced numerous challenges while launching Maxfield. With that same perseverance, our brand began to take shape. We’ve been intentional every step of the way, and soon, we’ll reveal the behind-the-scenes journey. Stay tuned...
Warm regards,
The Northwoods Humidors & Maxfield Cigar Accessories, Co. Team
